Excellent selective focus shot here. Nice composition, lighting, and depth of field.

For me, what makes this photograph is the dynamic pose of your main subject. It says: ready, aim, fire! No holding back. This idea is very well emphasized by the use of the shallow depth of field. Nice shot.

Nicely done. As others already pointed out, the DoF makes this shot work. But I also think the composition with three women along an opposite diagonal all walking into the water is equally important. I think if you just had the boy, it would look much more boring. There are two leading lines, both left-right, but one coming in, and one going away. Cool dynamic.

Thanks Patrick and Jan for your insightful comments!

This was my favorite shot of kids I photographed on the beach that day. In addition to what you guys and MIL and Larry pointed out, I really like the look of determination on the childs face. Do you see it? I don't know if he is determined to have fun or just determined not to fall but he looks serious about what he is doing doesn't he?

Cheers!
