The Violinist

Taken this past weekend. I took this shot of my father-in-law to test out my new Canon 5D. I was using my Canon 430 EX flash in TTL mode with an exposure compensation of -2. Once again I was very impressed with the quality of light produced by a single on camera flash in TTL mode.

Title: "The Violinist"

Shot data: 1/200s f/4.0 at 105.0mm iso400
Camera / Lens: Canon 5D / Canon 24-105mm L zoom
Post-processing: Adobe Camera Raw > Photoshop CS4 > Topaz Adjust plugin > Virtual Photographer plugin

Nice shot. I'd say the new camera is working out.

I have to agree with Larry. This is a well exposed portrait. Good skin tones.

I'm trying to decide if I wanted it taken just a tad further back and get a little more in the shot or come in tighter on the left. The way you have cropped it down almost calls for you to come in closer to his head. This would place his eyes more on the upper left power point instead of in the center of the photo.

I'm a little surprised you shot at 400 ISO with the flash. I guess you used that to control the ambient light? Your EV compensation was made on the flash?

Thanks Larry and Doug!

Doug - I use ISO 400 a lot because I don't hold my camera all that steady and I feel like I need a faster shutter speed than most folks. If I was in daylight or using a tripod then I would use ISO 100 for sure (although this camera and my 40D both seem to operate very well at ISO 400). I adjusted the exposure compensation on my camera (I'll admit that I don't even know how to adjust my flash in TTL mode).

Cheers!
Barry

Who am I to tell anyone how to crop their photo....but if it was me....since you are in so close anyway...why not crop on the left by his ear and on the right by his violin bow (which would give you a strong diagonal to the corner)...just a thought. I do like the lighting....and the camera!!
